Optimize Hard Drive Performance

Problem:
How can I optimize my hard drive performance in Windows 98?

Versions:
Windows 98

Solution:

This tip should only be performed by an advanced user. If you know you have at least one IDE hard drive on your computer, here's how to enhance it's performance...

  1. On your Desktop, right-click on My Computer
  2. From the pop-up menu, select Properties
  3. Click on the "Device Manager" tab
  4. Click on the plus (+) sign next to "Hard disc controllers"
  5. Double-click on something that says "bus master" or "IDE controller"
  6. Click on the "Settings" tab
  7. Under the "Dual IDE Channel Settings" drop-down menu, select "Both IDE Channels enabled"
  8. Click the OK button
  9. Click the OK button in the Device Manager
  10. You will prompted to restart your computer to apply the changes

There may not be any noticeable improvement in performance.
